There are many common questions asked when a child is not speaking. I continue to wonder why a child will say a word one time and then I won’t hear it again for many months, if at all. I often see or hear a new word or see new skill that I can’t wait to capture and show parents, but like most kids that don’t want to perform…it’s not happening! I am asked “how” at times. “How can I help my child at home?” I do my best to describe skills that can be reinforced, however different environments alter how a child performs. Yes, your child will behave differently at home and at school…that’s just how it goes. Perhaps the most difficult question I receive is “When?” Parents ask, “When will my child start speaking?” This is the toughest one. I cannot predict when they will start speaking, when they will take first steps, or when they will eat peas for the first time. It’s just one of those things. This is what I can suggest…work with your child, give them opportunities, take them places, expose them to new situations, focus on what makes them excited, give them down time and most of all don’t lose hope!!
